Professor
Nai-Teng Yu earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from
the National Taiwan University, and went on to receive his Master of
Science degree in Physical Chemistry from the New Mexico Highlands University;
he received his Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
After spending a year as a Postdoctoral
Fellow at MIT and Harvard, Dr. Yu began his career at the School of
Chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor
in 1970. Professor Yu had been in Georgia Tech ever since and was promoted
to Professorship in 1980. He also served as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology
at the Emory University Medical School since 1985.
After spending twenty years teaching
and conducting research at Georgia Tech, Professor Yu decided to accept
the post of Founding Head of the Chemistry Department at the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology. He has built up an excellent Chemistry
Department, which is operational in application-oriented basic research.
Among the areas he has developed are innovative methods in organic and
inorganic synthesis of advanced materials, laser-based molecular spectroscopy
and imaging, novel techniques for chemical analysis and surface science,
and rational design of drugs related to Chinese medicine. He has recruited
some excellent young chemists to join his Department.
Concurrent with his Professorship,
since 1998 Dr. Yu has served .as Chief Coordinator and Representative
of Germany's Fraunhofer-IBMT Technology Center in China, in partnership
with the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen.
Dr. Yu has been active in giving
lectures at various universities in Chinese mainland. Currently he is
Guest Professor at Peking University, Peking Union Medical College,
Jilin University, and Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry. Additionally,
he is the founder of the Hong Kong International Chemical Sciences Chapter
of the American Chemical Society, which was established in 1997.
Professor Yu has made profound
contributions in pure and applied chemistry, particularly in the metalloporphyrins
and hemoproteins, chemical, biochemical, biophysical, biomedical applications
of Raman spectroscopy, molecular basis of cataract formation and development
of biomedical diagnostic devices. He is the inventor of "Accu-Chek
D-Tector" for diabetes screening, which has proved to be a successful
technology transfer from academic basic research to industry. The manufacturer
of the device is SpectRx Inc., and the global marketing partner is Roche
Diagnostics-Boehringer Mannheim Corporation. Professor Yu was born in
Ping-Tung, Taiwan and has two children; his wife of thirty-two years,
Julia, passed away in 1998.
Although based in Hong Kong, Dr.
Yu spends much time in America. While in the United States, Professor
Yu is very active in Chinese community services. He is a founding member
of the Atlanta Chinese Community Center and a member of the Southeastern
United States Chinese Scholars Association. When asked about his hobbies,
Professor Yu proudly proclaimed "Chemistry is my profession and
also my hobby". He then confessed to a love also for Chinese calligraphy
and that he enjoys photography, classical music, and travel.
